Types of Shapewear: Your Guide to Choosing the Right Piece for Every Occasion

Shapewear is no longer just "something worn under your clothes" — it's a styling tool you wear to get the shape you want under any outfit, from a fitted evening dress to everyday clothing. The problem is that most women pick one "all-purpose" shaper and try to use it with everything, when each type is actually designed for a completely different purpose. This guide walks through the main types and when to reach for each one.

1. Full Body Shaper

Covers from the bust down to the upper thigh or knee, smoothing the entire body: stomach, waist, hips, and sometimes the back. The ideal choice under long, fitted dresses when you want one smooth, continuous line from top to bottom with no visible underwear lines.

Best for: long evening gowns, formal occasions.

2. Waist Cincher / Corset

Focuses only on the waist and stomach area, with a relatively narrow band that starts just under the bust and ends at the hip. Usually reinforced with boning for stronger hold and a more defined result specifically at the waist.

Best for: high-waisted skirts and trousers, dresses that specifically highlight the waist.

3. Shaping Shorts / Bike Shorts

Starts at the waist and ends mid-thigh, smoothing the stomach, hips, and upper thighs. One of the most comfortable types for everyday wear since it restricts movement the least.

Best for: short and midi dresses, everyday wear under fitted trousers.

4. High-Waist Briefs

Less coverage than shorts, focusing on the stomach only, with a high waistband that sometimes reaches just under the bust. The lightest, most breathable option among shapewear types.

Best for: hot days, simple everyday looks, anyone looking for only light support.

5. Shaping Bodysuit

Combines a built-in bra and a full-body shaper in one piece, usually with a bottom hook closure for easy wear. Prevents your top from "riding up" during movement, making it the best solution under fitted blouses tucked into a skirt or trousers.

Best for: tucked-in blouses, polished office looks.

6. Strapless / Backless Shaper

Designed specifically for backless dresses or dresses with thin straps, with no visible shoulder straps and a low back. Usually relies on internal silicone strips to stay in place without slipping.

Best for: backless wedding and evening gowns, strapless dresses.

How do you choose the right shaper?

Ask yourself three questions before buying:

  • What does my outfit show? (open back, high waist, tucked-in top) — this determines the shaper's silhouette
  • Which area do I want to focus on? Stomach only, waist, or the full body
  • How many hours will I wear it? The longer the wear, the more comfort should outweigh maximum compression

One last tip: size before compression level

A shaper in the wrong size — even if its compression is labeled "extra firm" — will highlight a problem instead of hiding it, through visible pressure lines at its edges. Always choose your true size, never a smaller one on the assumption of "stronger hold".
