How to Care for Your Bras: A Complete Maintenance Guide
A bra is one of the most frequently worn and most delicate garments you own — yet it's often washed and stored the same way as everyday clothing. The elastic, the underwire, and the lace all respond directly to how you treat them, and small daily habits make the difference between a bra that lasts two years and one that loses its shape in two months. Here's how to actually extend its life.
Washing: hand wash is always better
Machine washing is the single biggest cause of early wear, even on a gentle cycle. The tumbling motion stretches the elastic, tangles the straps, and can bend the underwire. If you must use a machine, always use a dedicated lingerie bag and the coldest, gentlest cycle available.
- Use cold or lukewarm water, never hot — heat breaks down elastic fibers
- Use a mild detergent free of bleach or fabric softener, which weakens elastic over time
- Gently squeeze the fabric; never wring or twist it
- Close the hook-and-eye closure before washing to prevent snagging other pieces
Drying: never use a dryer
Heat is the number one enemy of elastic. Tumble drying, even on low heat, breaks down the fibers that give a bra its shape and support far faster than normal wear does.
- Lay the bra flat on a towel, cups facing up, away from direct sunlight
- Never hang it by the straps — this stretches them permanently out of shape
- Reshape the cups gently while damp so they dry in their natural form
Storage: how you store it matters more than you think
Folding one cup into the other, common in drawers, permanently creases the cup and breaks down its shape over time.
- Store bras side by side, cups facing up and unfolded, like a shallow row
- Fasten the hooks before storing to keep the band from stretching under its own tension
- Avoid piling other clothing on top, which flattens the cups
Rotation: why one bra a day is a mistake
Elastic fibers need roughly 24 hours to fully recover their shape after being worn. Wearing the same bra two days in a row doesn't give it time to bounce back, which speeds up permanent stretching.
- Rotate between at least two to three bras used regularly
- Keep a dedicated sports bra separate from your everyday rotation — sweat breaks down elastic faster than normal wear
One last tip
Even with perfect care, elastic fibers naturally degrade over time. If you're already following all of the above and still notice the band losing its grip, it may simply be time for a replacement rather than a care issue — see our guide on the signs it's time for a new bra.
